The national park protects 21,789 hectares of land and water. The best way to view the local animals is during the two-hour boat tour. Guides know where specific species feed and rest along the 13-kilometer navigable stretch of the river.

What animals make up the Sumidero Canyon wildlife?

You will primarily see American crocodiles, spider monkeys, pelicans, and herons.

The canyon walls and riverbanks support diverse species. Spider monkeys move through the trees near the water. White and gray herons hunt for fish in the shallows. Vultures ride the thermal winds high above the gorge.

Are there crocodiles in Sumidero Canyon?

Yes, American crocodiles live in the Grijalva River.

You will often see them sunbathing on muddy banks or rocky outcrops along the river edge. This area is known as the Crocodile Banks. When a guide spots a crocodile, they cut the boat engine. The boat drifts closer, giving you time to take photos safely.

Pelicans, white and gray herons, and vultures are the most common.

Water birds gather near the river level. If you visit the upper viewpoints, such as Mirador El Tepehuaje, you can look down on soaring birds. Bring binoculars to watch vultures and occasionally other birds of prey gliding on the thermal currents in front of the viewing deck.

What are the rules for wildlife viewing?

You must wear a conservation bracelet and stay in the boat.

The park requires a $61 MXN CONANP conservation bracelet to fund habitat protection. You cannot disembark from the boats during the river tour. Visitors are strictly prohibited from extracting any flora or fauna. Take all your trash with you.
